Great Torrington is an historic town set in an elevated position looking out over the River Torridge. The town played a significant role in the English Civil War with the Battle of Torrington in 1646 marking the end of the Royalist resistance in the West Country. It is now recognised as an important heritage centre for the history of the 17th Century. The wonderful surrounding countryside has changed little since it inspired Henry Williamson to write his classic novel, “Tarka the Otter”. The town has a bustling centre with a wide range of independently run shops catering for all tastes. The Plough Arts Centre is highly regarded and hosts varied programme of films, theatre, music and art exhibitions with a café that opens most days.
